Project Description

Uttara Kumar is working with Dr. Schmitz on a project entitled "On-Machine Probing Compensation". In this project, a Homogeneous Transformation Matrix (HTM) model of the 3-axis Milltronics HMC35 machining center is being developed in order to compensate for errors in the geometric positioning accuracy of the machine tool that affect the on-machine probing accuracy. The positioning errors of the machine are common to both the tool point and probe locations and not observed in the probe measurements because the probe position uses the same axes that are used to generate the part features. By developing an HTM machine model, independent measurements of the individual errors for each axis (three translational and three rotational errors) and squareness errors between the three axes can be used to predict the actual probe coordinates based on the nominal axis positions (as reported by the scales or encoders), thus addressing the fundamental limitation to on-machine probing.
