Project Description

Dr. Hitomi Yamaguchi Greenslet

Raul is working with Dr. Hitomi Yamaguchi Greenslet on the development of an ultra-precision polishing process for MEMS X-ray mirrors. These grazing incidence mirrors use the sidewalls of small curvilinear slits (5-20 µm width, 1-10 mm length), or micro-pores. The MEMS fabrication techniques used to create these X-ray mirrors leave the micro-pore sidewalls with a less than ideal surface roughness. The polishing process employs magnetic field assisted finishing, a technique which enables the processing of surfaces inaccessible by conventional and even some non-traditional polishing processes. Raul's research activities include designing and building new polishing machines, completing polishing trials, and analyzing target surfaces.
