Project Description

Bijoyraj Sahu is working with Dr. Taylor on the design and fabrication of an automated MEMS microgripper which mimics macroscale CNC tool changers for changing nanofabrication probe tips. Implementation of this system in a commercial atomic force microscope (AFM) will enhance the throughput and expand multi-functionality applications in large scale nano-manufacturing. The microgripper automation is based on thermal actuation due to differential resistive heating. The project goal is to optimize the design for actuation range, gripping force, stiffness, and dimensions compatible to atomic force microscopy. The microgripper will be realized by standard micro-fabrication techniques and its performance will be evaluated by experiments.
