Project Description
Jun is a visiting Ph.D. candidate from Xi'an Jiaotong University, China, working with Dr. Schmitz in the area of machining dynamics. The purpose of this project is to complement the prior tool point frequency prediction efforts based on the receptance coupling substructure analysis (RCSA) method using improved tool-holder modeling. New beam models will be implemented to describe the tool and holder free-free receptances. The beam models will incorporate the cross-sectional geometry of both the holder and fluted portion of endmills. The performance of the new models will be validated through impact testing of multiple tool-holder combinations inserted in representative high-speed spindles. It is expected that the new approach will improve the frequency response prediction accuracy of the RCSA algorithm, particularly for endmills with large flute lengths.
